Writing about the relationship between design cultures and possible futures means focusing on specific research fields, actors, historical periods, generative tools used to materialize and give shape to the visions. The article presents three possible topics – environments, objects, bodies – as exemplification of this relationship. Through a historical reflection that starts from the futuristic dimensions of interior spaces and continues narrating the anticipatory power of de- signed artefacts, the essay leads to the body as the contemporary border for innovative explo- rations and experimentations that allow sharing ideas of the futures within the design process.

Abstract

Writing about the relationship between design cultures and possible futures means focusing on specific research fields, actors, historical periods, generative tools used to materialize and give shape to the visions. The article presents three possible topics – environments, objects, bodies – as exemplification of this relationship. Through a historical reflection that starts from the futuristic dimensions of interior spaces and continues narrating the anticipatory power of de- signed artefacts, the essay leads to the body as the contemporary border for innovative explo- rations and experimentations that allow sharing ideas of the futures within the design process.
