The study of relations between organizations has been a major concern for management theorists in the past two decades. In the context of healthcare, network theories and methodologies ha-ve been adopted to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the public health delivery system, and to optimize the allocation of limited health resources. In several countries, the new public mana-gement theorists have recently discussed the introduction of networks in healthcare for those organi-zations engaged in clinical activities. In Italy the health care sector reform process started with some important legislative interventions in the early ’90s. These encouraged hospitals and Local health units to adopt new organizational structures to increase their efficiency and effectiveness. Even though the benefits associated with these models are largely speculative, there is still a lack of empirical eviden-ce about the dynamics of relationships among healthcare organizations, and about their effects on or-ganizational performance. The aim of this paper is to start filling this gap by summarizing the early re-sults of a broader research program (called MInOReL), which describes and analyses inter-organiza-tional relations envolving the Emergency departments of a highly populated Italian region
