The recent celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) allows both a general consideration of children’s rights and self-criticism of social and professionals sectors, in order to better focus on the distance between official statements and effective respect in children’s life settings. These settings also include hospitals which are an occasional but also important life setting for children. Hospital is a fundamental institution in terms of the social role it plays and it also has a pivotal role also in relation to other social organizations and community services. Recently international research – conducted in 17 hospitals and pediatric departments in Europe and Australia – studied the respect for children’s rights in hospitals, arousing the attention of the hospital management, of the staff and of children’s representative associations on this issue. This also enabled us to underline the main problems and merits concerning children’s rights.
