The simplest application of reverse engineering is to copy: starting from an already final solution (e.g. a boat) one can get the definition of each part; this can lead to proprietary technology issues if the commercial product is protected. This is the reason why reverse engineering gets really powerfulwhen the scope is not only to copy, but to improve the already existing solution in the market, starting from it to develop a better solution. The technique is causing product development times to shrink and therefore competition is becoming more aggressive. But reverse engineering techniques are used also in other applications; in the case of the present work the scope has nothing to do with copying. The objective was to get the mathematical definition of the boat’s surface; this is the first step to do any computer aided analysis. The question at this point could be why is it that the company that develops their own boats has not its Mathematical definition already; the answer is that the current way of working does not involve 3D computer aided design software; boats are defined in 2D only, and mathematical definition for only few sections is given. This is enough to overcome the boats homologation process, and to develop the constructive molds, even though there is no unique 3D solution needed for computer simulation analysis.
