In his late years Moses Mendelssohn undertook a translation of the Pentateuch (Torah) into German (using the Hebrew alphabet) for the benefit of Jewish children and with the aim of bringing German Jews closer to the holy scriptures. Although generally welcomed, this work (published between 1780 and 1783) led, within the Jewish enlightenment movement Haskalah, to a complex and heated discussion about language use and the de facto multilingualism of the Jewish Community in German-speaking areas.
