FIELD ACTIVITY EVALUATION OF OLD AND NEW FUNGICIDES AGAINST PEAR BROWN SPOT (STEMPHYLIUM VESICARIUM ) Many fungicides were evaluated over four years (2010-2013) in the control of Stemphylium vesicarium, causal agent of brown spot, the most important fungal disease of pear in northern Italy. Several field plot trials were carried out in an experimental orchard, applying the products at intervals of about 10 days from fruit-setting to about one month before harvest. Assessments were conducted on fruits, at or close to harvest time. The disease pressure was generally rather high in all trials. The fungicides iprodione, strobilurins (pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin and kresoxim-methyl, solo or in mixture with a partner), fludioxonil + cyprodinil generally confirmed their known activity against pear brown spot, even if their relative efficacy was not always totally satisfactory, probably because of too large application intervals. In the last year, in vitro tests showed a sensitivity reduction of S. vesicarium to strobilurins. Good performances were also observed in the field for the known captan (solo and, better, in tank mixture with tebuconazole), for boscalid, fludioxonil, the recent fluazinam solo and for the new fluopyram applied in ready mixture with tebuconazole.
