This study explores how Gramsci's category of subaltern has been adopted by scholars with the purpose to depict the new social and cultural role of migrant workers as a subaltern group in contemporary China. In light of a rise of Gramsci's thought internationally and its consequent spread in China, this paper argues tha Gramsci's category of subaltern could be applied to the Chinese context to better explain the changes occured to the working class. This studu will examine the strategies employed by migrant workers to assert their social existence and to gain political recognition and respect in the new Chinese society. Strong emphasis will be placed on their poetic production, as a prominet part of migrant workers' literature and fundamental source of their 'right to speak'.
