The paper discusses the possible role that mobile satellite communications systems can play in 4G. The contribution is positioned into the context of the evolution of cellular/wireless 4G networks. Possible market segments and system architectures are described, including direct access to individuals and user groups on the move, mobile broadcasting applications, and backhauling. The challenges that satellite communications will face in the 4G arena are considered, in terms of market, business, technical, standardization, and regulatory aspects.
