The Main Coon represents a natural feline breed native to North America which is knowing great popularity in several European countries. The typical characteristics of this “Gentle Giant” of the domestic feline world make it easily recognizable and are mainly represented by a long and sturdy body, a large and squared head, with characteristic tufts of hair at the tips of the ears and a beautiful waterproof and insulating semi-long coat, particularly dense on the neck, on the abdomen and on the long tail. This docile and sociable breed is characterized by a rather late somatic and sexual development and is predisposed to certain genetic diseases, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which has been object of an intensive eradication program for a few years, through the monitoring of all the Maine Coon cats by genetic testing.
