Seneca, ben. 6,31,1-10 contains the exemplum of Demaratus: unlike the Persian generals, who were in favour of the war, he advised Xerses against invading Greece. Seneca’s passage is the only instance of a declamation on the subject deliberat Xerses an Graecis bellum inferendum, mentioned in the handbooks of rhetoric. The topic is elaborated in utramque partem, that is both in favour of and against the war. The paper analyzes its relationship with Herodotus’ account of the same events, and with declamations (especially by Seneca the Elder) on historical subjects.
Seneca, ben.
