La «Sirenide», una riscrittura della «Commedia» in età post-tridentina

“Sirenide“ is a sacred poem by Paolo Regio. After its publication in 1603, the author added a long comment in 1606. The importance of “Sirenide“ is due less to aesthetic reasons than to cultural ones, in as much as it shows how the initial Dantean model interacts with the recent masterpiece of “Jerusalem Delivered“. This can be seen not only in the choice of the “ottava rima” instead of the tercet, but also in the adaption of Dante’s “Comedy“ to the demands of the Council of Trent. As regards Tasso’s poem, Regio omits any reference to love, whilst the spiritual dimension gains emphasis.

La “Sirenide“ è un poema sacro di Paolo Regio. In seguito alla pubblicazione nel 1603, l’autore vi aggiunse un ampio commento nel 1606. L’importanza dell’opera si deve non tanto a considerazioni estetiche quanto a motivi culturali, dal momento che la “Sirenide“ palesa come il modello originario dantesco interagisce con il recente capolavoro della “Gerusalemme liberata“. Ciò risulta evidente sia nella scelta dell’ottava rima anziché della terzina, sia nell’adattamento della “Commedia“ dantesca alle esigenze del Concilio di Trento. Per quanto riguarda il poema tassiano, Regio sopprime ogni riferimento alla tematica amorosa, privilegiando piuttosto la dimensione spirituale.
