This paper presents the first results of a linguistic study on the use of discourse markers in Spanish readers’ comments within online press in relation to the spoken/written language variation. The analysis carried on the functions of these particles in a corpus of comments published in El País.com and Clarín.com, shows that the markers used in both media are logical-argumentative connectors with oppositional, consecutive, additive and explanatory discursive values. In many other cases, they have an interactive reactive function. Furthermore, these markers are polyfunctional and appear more frequently in comments which can be conceptually situated within the spoken variation, in the communicative immediacy.
