A revision of PSI 1300 allows to postulate that l. 1 of Sappho’s fr. 2 V. is not the incipit of this poem; a different text from previous attempts is possible to be proposed too. The fr. 2 V. was likely a ritual song whose goal was to invoke Aphodite’ attendance at a libation: it was likely performed in an ἔναυλος, i.e. a sacral natural open space.

Abstract

A revision of PSI 1300 allows to postulate that l. 1 of Sappho’s fr. 2 V. is not the incipit of this poem; a different text from previous attempts is possible to be proposed too. The fr. 2 V. was likely a ritual song whose goal was to invoke Aphodite’ attendance at a libation: it was likely performed in an ἔναυλος, i.e. a sacral natural open space.
