Through this paper it has been presented a new approach to aircraft engine design that contrast a common misconception. The common assumption, that consider the lower rpm engines as the best in aircraft design, has been overcome; another weak point in aeronautical design is about the direct transmission. Many examples demonstrate that the most acceptable solution presents compact, small and fast engines with gear reduction unit and high gear ratio. It lead to use slow and efficient propellers. Besides, double sparking plug is no more justified with of the new platinum sparking plug, the redundant electronic ignition and the smaller unitary displacement that characterize the new generation aircraft engines. What remain the old design guidelines is the necessity of a careful design and an high quality in production processes to obtain the main requirements of aircraft design such as high reliability and long life.
