In his two last works - De thesauris (1573) and De regia potestate (edited posthumous) - Bartolomé de Las Casas organically expounded the opinions that inspired his whole life, boldly spent in defence of the peoples living in the New World. In his perspective Indios, as human beings, have a basic right to freedom. No one can deprive them of their legitimate sistem of self-government. The same conclusions can be reached on the basis of the ius commune and its most representative commentators.
