On December 31, 1564, violent clashes between law students from Milan and Parma broke out in Bologna. The episode, recorded in papers housed in the Bologna archive of the Criminal Court, "Tribunale del Torrone", is analyzed with reference to the social and political context of the city in the second half of the sixteenth century – the years of the vicelegato Pier Donato Cesi, of the construction of the Archiginnasio, of the Council of Trento and of the increase in disciplinary procedure imposed on students – and with reference to recent studies on student violence in Europe. Of the various possible reasons identified to explain such events, in this episode the rivalry among "nationes" would appear to be predominant factor, although the repressive Counter-Reformation background – aimed at limiting traditional student freedom – certainly exasperated the discontent among scholars, providing further potential for violence.

Abstract
On December 31, 1564, violent clashes between law students from Milan and Parma broke out in Bologna. The episode, recorded in papers housed in the Bologna archive of the Criminal Court, "Tribunale del Torrone", is analyzed with reference to the social and political context of the city in the second half of the sixteenth century – the years of the vicelegato Pier Donato Cesi, of the construction of the Archiginnasio, of the Council of Trento and of the increase in disciplinary procedure imposed on students – and with reference to recent studies on student violence in Europe. Of the various possible reasons identified to explain such events, in this episode the rivalry among "nationes" would appear to be predominant factor, although the repressive Counter-Reformation background – aimed at limiting traditional student freedom – certainly exasperated the discontent among scholars, providing further potential for violence.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
