Abstract

The upper emicycle of the the Po plain Holocene sedimentary wedge seems to begin at the end of Neolithic period or soon after, about the boundary Eneolithic/Bronze Age (ca. 4 ka BP). It represents the depositional regression phase of the postglacial transgression developping a series of deltaic bodies variously eroded by the sea action. The best chronological constraints come from geoarchaeological contexts related to the last 2 ka BP. The main severe coastal erosion phases refer to four rearrangement moments of the inner hydrograpic network. The climatic significance of the first (Bronze age) and the last (lower Middle ages) phases are still under debate. In the last millennium the kind of the riverbed model deeply changed from an anabranch to a monochannel type.
