The author argues that, in spite of several shortcomings, the book he reviewed represents an important contribution to the history of Tibetan religious architecture. Alexander adopted a correct interdisciplinary methodology taking into account local written and oral sources as well as Tibetan terminology. He leads the reader through an exciting visit through otherwise forgotten sites in Lhasa, providing a wealth of information, pictures and plans, detailing also the urban planning and renovation carried out in Lhasa in the 1990s. His work represents an essential contribution to the history of Tibetan architecture and an essential reference book for scholars, students as well as architects and conservators.
