Abstract

The process of digitalization is having a huge impact upon markets and society at any level, even if it looks bizarre even food culture and cooking is affected by this transformation. What can be considered as an insult by the purist gastronomic heritage is, as a matter of fact, a normal process of social relation's evolution through both food and food consumption. Of course we are not talking about digital food, thing that could be made possible in the near future according to Anderson in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), but about how digital devices and platforms are reshaping the way we eat and the way we socialize through food consumption practices, but also offering an opportunity of reducing food waste trough a better organized logistic process, based upon traceability of almost everything in the globe. Within this framework the notions of Globalization, Mc Donaldization, Web 2.0 and Web Society are essentials to better understand the switch we wish to describe. Once we have described these concepts the essay will focus upon the prosumer role and the process of prosumption as the expression of a contradiction between the empowered and the exploited consumer in the field of food. Food production and consumption can be considered as the kingdom of prosumption, because any action has its flipside of being both productive and consumerist, or in other words we may say the kitchen and the dinning table are the paradigmatic representation of the merging of production and consumption. Moreover Web 2.0 and Web society simultaneously made the prosumer's role self evident in many activities together with the adoption of smart tools that emphasize the fading of the barriers between digital and physical world.
