The poet Alfred Tennyson not only became vastly popular in the course of his life, but in 1850 he was also appointed Poet Laureate, and in 1884 he was even made a Baronet. Therefore it does not come as a surprise that at his death in 1892 – at the age of 83 – Tennyson received the honour of a stately funeral and was buried in front of Chaucer’s tomb. My paper examines the canonical status Tennyson achieved in his life and the ceremonies that followed his death in order to explore the links between his works, his role as a public figure and the discourses of nation and empire.

Abstract
The poet Alfred Tennyson not only became vastly popular in the course of his life, but in 1850 he was also appointed Poet Laureate, and in 1884 he was even made a Baronet. Therefore it does not come as a surprise that at his death in 1892 – at the age of 83 – Tennyson received the honour of a stately funeral and was buried in front of Chaucer’s tomb. My paper examines the canonical status Tennyson achieved in his life and the ceremonies that followed his death in order to explore the links between his works, his role as a public figure and the discourses of nation and empire.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
