Lipidology is a specialty section of Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, Frontiers in Genetics, Frontiers in Physiology and Frontiers in Nutrition. This section is dedicated to publishing and disseminating new significant knowledge on the genetics, physiology and metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins and their role in health and disease at the molecular, cellular, clinical, social and epidemiological levels. Lipids (eg: fatty acids, acylglycerol, cholesterol, phospholipids), apoproteins and lipoproteins are part of complex networks which cover a wide variety of key functions in mammalian homeostasis. The field of lipidology is rapidly evolving and represents a real challenge in personalized medicine and public health. In the recent years, studies conducted in animal models and rare human lipid disorders have shed light on important biological and physiological pathways involving lipids and lipoproteins and have contributed to the development of new therapies and improved diagnosis and screening of diseases. The emergence of powerful analytic methods in omics sciences, systems biology and imaging contribute to the conceptual understanding of lipid physiology and increase the needs of translation of scientific knowledge into health services and clinically useful and valid information.
