The aim of our paper is: 1- to show the different modality of heating of three electric heat sources (“System B”, “Obturation unit” and “Endotwinn”) 2- to test the temperatures really reached on their different tips and 3- to test if there are differences in the temperature raised when the tips are brand new or used and thermo-sterilized, utilizing an infrared thermo-camera. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study has been utilized an “AVIO - TVS 620 P” infrared thermo-camera. with a SW AVIO PE Researcher software. The following electric heat sources have been tested: 1) System B® (Sybron Endo, USA) with tips # 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2. 2) Obturation Unit® (Sybron Endo, USA) with tips # 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2. 3) Endotwinn® (Ritter) with tips # ETF 0.3/0.004, ETF 0.5/0.003, ETF 0.5/0.005, ETL 0.5/0.06. Each heating tip has been tested brand new and after 5 sterilization cycles. During the tests the room temperature was constant between 20°C and 23°C, with humidity between 35% and 40%. Each tip has been previously coated with an acrylic paint characterized by a standard coefficient of emission of 0.98. The heat sources “System B” and “Obturation unit” have been tested set at 200°C and 300°C, but the “Endotwinn” has been tested as set by the manufacturer (200°C). Each test lasted to the reaching of the set temperature, or after 2 minutes and the real time video images. CONCLUSIONS From this preliminary study some observations can be reported: The “System B® “ source is not able to reach the set temperature with all the tested tips. The “Obturation Unit®“ source is able to reach the set temperature with all the tested tips. The T° max was always reached on the top of the tips mounted on “System B” and “Obturation unit”, but in the middle part of the tips mounted on “Endotwinn” The Endotwinn heatsource is very slow to reach the T°max., which is lower of the manufacturer claimed temperature. Tips with lager caliper take more time to reach the set temperature. Further studies mast be done to validate these preliminary results.
