zCOSMOS is a large redshift survey (0<z<3) undertaken in the COSMOS field. We use the current sample of 10000 zCOSMOS spectra of sources selected at IAB <= 22.5, combined with the ZADE modified photometric redshift probability distributions of objects not yet observed spectroscopically, to define the density field out to z 1. The reconstructed overdensity field consists of cluster-like patterns surrounded by void-like regions up to the highest redshift probed. The relations between galaxy's properties (colour and morphology) and the environment in which they reside are already at place at redshift z 1, having red and early type galaxies populating denser environments than blue and late type galaxies. Once the stellar mass of galaxies is fixed, the observed trends between galaxy properties and environment weaken. We interpret this as a natural consequence of the dependence of the stellar mass function on environment.
