The volume deals with a particularly sensitive issue in the nowadays era of globalisation: the definition, discussion and interrelation of such concepts as Nation, State and Territory. The major purpose of the analysis is to illustrate how place and territory participate to the process of nation-building, as much as language, religion and a shared history. Many are the concepts explored in the volume. In the view of the author they should serve as introductory remarks to a second volume (still not available at the moment of writing), in which they will be concretely applied to a series of case studies chosen among the nations in Southeastern Europe
