The seismic sequence that struck the Emilia region on the 20th and 29th of May 2012 highlighted the high vulnerability of industrial buildings in that area, where precast concrete structures were typically not designed according to seismic criteria, not prescriptive until recently. In response to these disastrous events, it’s essential to take action to change and improve the seismic behavior of the precast concrete structures. This study presents the interventions conducted on two precast concrete buildings located in the area hit by the earthquake and heavily damaged. In the paper, all the phases of the design are described, from the first in-situ surveys and the finite element modeling, to the choice and actual design of the seismic retrofit intervention performed.
