How social and structural characteristics influence the choices and therefore the life course of working mothers? This is the research question that this paper attempts to answer. In the theoretical part, starting from Hakim Preference Theory and referring to the relational theory, the author wants to underline which aspects contribute to build the identity of women who have both family and work responsibilities. The empirical part is based on the analysis of 50 in-depth interviews addressed to working mothers in relation to their identities in daily work-life balance. The results demonstrate that an essential element to understand mother identity and their choices about work and family is not only the personal reflexivity of women, but mostly the “wereflexivity”- developed together with their partner.
