Several researchers have used the game of Chess as a testbed for their novel ideas in Computer Science: notably, among them, Claude Shannon – the father of Information Theory – and Alan Turing – the father of Artificial Intelligence. An important issue for the advancement of the discipline has been the possibility for designers of chess-playing programs to participate in tournaments against humans or other programs. In this way the new ideas could compete directly with older, more established ideas, and only the best survived to the test of actual play.

Abstract

Several researchers have used the game of Chess as a testbed for their novel ideas in Computer Science: notably, among them, Claude Shannon - the father of Information Theory - and Alan Turing - the father of Artificial Intelligence. An important issue for the advancement of the discipline has been the possibility for designers of chess-playing programs to participate in tournaments against humans or other programs. In this way the new ideas could compete directly with older, more established ideas, and only the best survived to the test of actual play.
