This article aims at analyzing a specific case-study in the growing competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China in Southeast Asia, triggered on one hand by the “Pivot to Asia”, and on the other, by the Chinese “charm offensive”. In such a scenario, Myanmar represents the epicenter of the challenge among the “forerunners” of the new and old regional order, particularly after the American shift towards a “pragmatic engagement” approach. Consequently, the nature, reasons and patters of this ongoing process of strategic repositioning put into practice by Myanmar within the political triangle with Washington and Beijing is central to the analysis, which draws upon the conceptualization of a “hedging strategy.”

Abstract
This article aims at analyzing a specific case-study in the growing competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China in Southeast Asia, triggered on one hand by the “Pivot to Asia”, and on the other, by the Chinese “charm offensive”. In such a scenario, Myanmar represents the epicenter of the challenge among the “forerunners” of the new and old regional order, particularly after the American shift towards a “pragmatic engagement” approach. Consequently, the nature, reasons and patters of this ongoing process of strategic repositioning put into practice by Myanmar within the political triangle with Washington and Beijing is central to the analysis, which draws upon the conceptualization of a “hedging strategy.”I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
