In the ancient Armenian translation of Plato’s Apology some unexpected renderings seem to reflect the Greek exegetical tradition. This paper discusses whether they point to glosses from Plato or to glosses coming from the lexicographical tradition, whether they are more likely to be scholia of the translator’s manuscript or interpretations from an independent lexicon and, in the last case, whether this was monolingual (Greek) or bilingual (Greek-Armenian). Furthermore, two of the cases under examination might throw light on other aspects of the translation, such as the linguistic identity of the translator(s) and the editing of the text.
