Foaming toreducethedensityofgeopolymericmaterialsisincreasinglybeingreportedintheliteratureasithasbeenshowntobeeffectivein improving theirinsulatingproperties.However,thereisnoconsistencyinfoamingmethodsandassuchthisstudywasperformedtocompare methods inordertobetterunderstandtheireffectonthepropertiesofgeopolymers.Asurfactantandtwochemicalfoamingagents(hydrogen peroxide andaluminiumpowder)wereaddedtoa fly ashbasedgeopolymermatrix.Surfactantwasalsocombinedwitheachofthechemical foaming agentsinordertostabilisethefoaminthegeopolymermatrixandtoreducecoarsepores.Thephysical,mechanicalandmicrostructural properties ofthelowdensitygeopolymersarepresentedandtheeffectsofthefoamingagents'characteristicsonthehardenedproductis discussed, aswellastherelativemeritsofthedifferentprocedurestosynthesisethefoamedgeopolymer.Itwasfoundthathomogeneous microstructures withsmallporescanbeobtainedbyaddingsurfactantandhydrogenperoxide.Thecombinationofhydrogenperoxide(0.1wt%) and surfactant(1.0wt%)producedgeopolymerfoamswithdensityandcompressivestrengthvaluesof0.94g/cm3 and 4.6MPa,respectively.
