This international workshop was organized by CASY, the Center of Research on Complex Automated Systems, DEIS-University of Bologna, coordinated by prof. Claudio Bonivento. A top selection of distinguished speakers at the international level accepted the invitation to share, for a full week, interactions, discussions and exchanges of ideas on few selected topics of their scientific area. As highlighted by the title, the focus of this workshop (which hopefully is the first of a continuing series) was on theoretical and conceptual problems inspired and motivated by challenging applications as well as on applications whose development requires the use of a rigorous formalism and theory. The main idea was that the meeting could become a source of inspiration for new application-driven theoretical developments as well as for new effective solutions to advanced applications which are still looking for a suitable theoretical support. A complete description of the iniziative is reported in http://www.casy.deis.unibo.it/CASY_workshop/index.html The main scientific results presented during the workshop constitute the basis for a on going publication in the Springer LINCIS series (see attachment no. 2).

Abstract
2).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
