A disease known as reddening of corn was described as epidemic in some areas of Serbia since fifty years ago. Affected plants have poor and shriveling grains, show early and abnormal ripening, and dry precociously. Using molecular tools such as direct and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses on different chromosomal regions phytoplasmas belonging to 16SrXII-A ribosomal subgroup were identified in all 16 samples tested from symptomatic plants. The asymptomatic samples collected from 4 different plants were always negative in all direct and nested PCR tests performed for pathogen identification. Sequencing of 16S ribosomal region and of G35p/m amplified chromosomal region of sample from corn plant 2005/2 confirm the phytoplasma identity.
