We present the results of an extensive research on securing the client-server communications of an auction service. The aim of our work was to identify COTS components that offer security properties, that are lightweight, and that are as much transparent to the client as possible. We identified and intensively tested the TLS suite that slowdowns the server performance of about five times with respect to not secure communications.

Abstract
