La présente étude vise à restituer la signification que les emblématistes des XVIe et XVIIe siècles donnaient aux termes latins «auctor», «author» ou «autor» et «actor», à leurs dérivés «auctoritas», «authoritas» ou «autoritas», etc., ainsi qu’aux termes qui en proviennent dans les langues néo-latines. Elle montre que le sens et la graphie de tous ces termes ont durablement fait l’objet de débats, de fluctuations ou de confusions, en raison de l’étymologie qui leur était attribuée. Les lexicographes médiévaux et modernes les faisaient en effet venir soit du latin, soit du grec. Ainsi s’explique qu’on relève pendant des siècles des flottements ou des hésitations sur le sens à retenir et sur la graphie à adopter, tant en latin qu’en "volgare". Questo articolo si prefigge di definire, da un lato, il significato che gli emblematisti dei secoli XVI e XVII hanno offerto ai termini latini «auctor», «author», «autor», «actor» (e ai loro derivati «auctoritas», «authoritas» e «autoritas») e, dall’altro, di ricostruirne l’eredità acquisita dalle lingue neo-latine. Mostra che significato e grafia di questi termini non sono stati solo oggetto di dibattiti ma hanno anche subito molteplici trasformazioni (oltre che confusioni), secondo i valori a loro attribuiti. I lessicografi antichi - seguiti in questo dai moderni - li hanno messi in rapporto etimologico ora con il latino, ora con il greco. Si spiegano così i cambiamenti semantici e linguistici e le esitazioni grafiche che li hanno accompagnati fin all’antichità, sia in tradizione latina sia in lingua volgare. The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to define the meaning that 16th and 17th century emblematists gave to the Latin terms «auctor», «author», «autor», «actor» (and to their derivatives «auctoritas», «authoritas» and «autoritas») and, on the other, to reconstruct the legacy of this in the Neo-Latin languages. It illustrates how the meaning and spelling of these terms have been subject not only to debate but also many transformations(and much confusion) in the retinue of the values attributed to them. Ancient lexicographers – followed in this by modern ones – have related them etymologically sometimes with Latin, sometimes with Greek. This explains the semantic and linguistic changes and uncertainties in spelling that have accompanied them ever since ancient times, both in the Latin tradition and in ordinary language.
