A series of box-core samples were collected in a coastal area of the North Adriatic Sea (Ravenna, Italy), in July 2007 using a stainless-steel box-corer from which, short core replicates were taken in Plexiglas tubes. Down-core measurements for radiochemical tracers (210Pb, 137Cs) combined with geochemical studies have been used to elucidate potential temporal changes in major elements, and to reconstruct the history of metal inputs in the area of study, which is under the influence of an estuary. Long-term (decadal) sediment accumulation can be assessed using 210Pb (half-life 22.3 y). 210Pb is produced by the decay of 238U and is supplied to the water column through precipitation, runoff, and decay of its parent 226Ra [1]; and it has been successfully used in the Po shelf to estimate 100-yr accumulation rates [3].
