As Anthony Pym points out in the introduction, more people than ever all over the world are being trained as translators and interpreters. The global expansion of the field since the late 1980s means that there are now hundreds of specialized university-level training programs world-wide, plus countless courses given in private institutions. This massive expansion may be a sign of success. Yet it also risks incurring a fragmentation of the field, leading to a situation in which there are so many different scenarios involved that it is difficult to find consensus on the fundamental questions of what should be taught, to whom, by whom, and how. The volume presents in printed form the materials produced in two international online symposia organized in January 2000 by the International Group at the Universitat Rovira I Virgili (Spain), which saw the participation of more than 300 people. The first symposium with the title “Innovation in Translator and Interpreter Training“ dealt with innovation in the use of teamwork, class size, the accreditation of translators, how to teach literary translation, the changing role of media translation, the place of interpreting, the importance of dealing with neologism, and the general impact of technology. The second symposium, “Translator Training and E-Learning” addressed multiple aspects of e-learning as it applies to the training of translators and interpreters. The volume presents the position papers and the summaries of discussion of each symposium, featuring altogether contributions by more than 20 scholars. An excellent introduction to and overview of issues and debates in translator training at the start of the new millennium.
