In natural mucilage, G. fragilis appears often to be broken and not easily recognizable; on the contrary, different diatom species proliferate and increase in number so that the prominent role of this dinoflagellate in mucilage formation could be questionable. Fatty acids and sterols can be used as a general chemotaxonomic guide as they are essential components of biological membranes with great structural diversity and good biological specificity. As a matter of fact, lipid pattern appears characteristic and distinct in different classes of microalgae, so fatty acids and sterols can constitute particularly useful biomarkers when organism integrity has been compromised, as in aged mucilaginous aggregates. In the present work we compare some biochemical features of cultured G. fragilis with those of natural mucilage samples

Abstract
In the present work we compare some biochemical features of cultured G. fragilis with those of natural mucilage samplesI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
