The II Italian Conference of the Interdivisional Group of Raman Spectroscopies and Non-Linear Effects (Gruppo Interdivisionale di Spettroscopie Raman ed effetti non-lineari, GISR) was held in Bologna (Italy), 6 to 8 June 2012, in the excellent location of the Congress Centre of the National Research Council (CNR) in Bologna and was chaired by M.G.Giorgini, University of Bologna and A. Torreggiani, ISOF (CNR). In spite of the dramatic earthquake occurred in the vicinity of Bologna some days before the conference, a substantial group of researchers, prevalently young people, coming from different regions of Italy, and some from abroad, gathered in this site to discuss and share their scientific experiences in fundamental and applicative researches in the field of Raman spectroscopy and nonlinear optical effects. Three plenary conferences were given at the opening of each day, followed by talks (27) and poster contributions (38) discussed in two dedicated sessions. A committee awarded a prize to four of them, selected from young researchers. Participants with specific instrumental interests participated, in the last half day of the Conference, to an extra session where a practical exhibition with two non conventional Raman spectrometers took place. Following a previous edition of this Conference (Catania 2007), participants were invited to submit contributions appropriate for publication on the special issue of Journal of Raman Spectroscopy dedicated to GISR2012.
