Abstract

Translation theory needs a fresher and firmer theoretical underpinning. This "map" is part of a larger project which is based on C.S. Peirce's theory of sign. It contains a cursory review of basic semiotics notions and it shows how they can be applied to translation theory. The article offers a rough idea of what semiotics is about and how it can benefit a translation scholars. The semiotics notions covered include semiosis, the object-sign-interpretant triad, ground and goal, habit and belief, and pragmatism. The translation topics include processes and product, equivalence, the dialectic between originals and translations, the categories of source and traget, and norms.
