In this paper a method to calculate the electromagnetic coupling between electric monopoles and conducting planes inside a metallic enclosure is described. The method is based on the analogy between a mono-modal rectangularwaveguide and a transmission line. The planes are modelled with an equivalent impedance in the equivalent circuit representing the section of transmission line through which the two monopoles are coupled. Comparison of the predicted results with experimental results for various con gurations shows good support for the theory. The method has a general validity and can be easily extended to include magnetic dipoles and high-order modes. The ultimate goal of this methodology is the development of a computer simulation tool to predict electromagnetic coupling between PCBs and other radiating structures such as interconnects inside a metallic enclosure.
