Gastric acidification reduces gastrin release and consequently hydrochloric acid secretion, but its long term effect has not been enough studied. The number of enterochromaffin-like and parietal cells was evaluated in 60 weaning pigs, using histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. Pigs supplemented with 12 g/kg calcium formate for 7 or 8 days had a relevant reduction of parietal cells, compared to control ones. With fat-protected formate supplementation (same dose) this reduction was not observed. The number of enterochromaffin-like cells showed a similar trend, but not statistically significant. Effects on gastric morphology should be controlled when a diet supplemented with calcium formate was ceased. Furthermore a reduction of the number of parietal cells could impair the absorption of vitamin B12 due to a reduced secretion of intrinsic factor by this type of cells.

Abstract
Furthermore a reduction of the number of parietal cells could impair the absorption of vitamin B12 due to a reduced secretion of intrinsic factor by this type of cells.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
