In reviewing the 50 years that have elapsed since the Elysée Treaty (22nd January 1963), and hence the history of the France-Germany axis, one starting-point might be the recent interview given by former socialist Foreign Minister, Hubert Védrine, in which he speaks of needing to adjust the equilibrium between France and Germany. Exactly how may that relationship be called unbalanced today? Above all, behind Védrine’s words is there perhaps nostalgia for the good old days when France was political top-dog in Europe and Germany merely the economic powerhouse?

Abstract

In reviewing the 50 years that have elapsed since the Elysée Treaty (22nd January 1963), and hence the history of the France-Germany axis, one starting-point might be the recent interview given by former socialist Foreign Minister, Hubert Védrine, in which he speaks of needing to adjust the equilibrium between France and Germany. Exactly how may that relationship be called unbalanced today? Above all, behind Védrine’s words is there perhaps nostalgia for the good old days when France was political top-dog in Europe and Germany merely the economic powerhouse?
