After Silvio Berlusconi’s announced return to the fray and Mario Monti’s imminent resignation, one might think Rome more deserving of this title. But Italy is an anomaly, in history and tradition. First “cradle of fascism”, then land of the “locked democracy” and ultimately laboratory for a botched alternating democracy, our country has an age-old history of politics drifting into farce. Paris, along with Berlin, is meant to form the bearing structure of Europe, so that when a reputable newspaper (albeit somewhat prone to chauvinism) like the Economist devotes yet another front page to French politics and speaks of a “time-bomb” ready to explode, one had better sit up and take stock.
