The new christian democrats of the UDC are currently in a key position in the Italian political system. Both the major party on the right (Berlusconi’s PDL) and that on the left (Bersani’s PD) repeatedly try to involve the UDC in coalitions. With whom the UDC will choose to ally becomes a fundamental issue. Studying the behaviour of the UDC thus seems to be crucial for a deeper understanding of Italian politics in the present situation. This work analyzes the electoral strategies and the performance of the UDC in the administrative elections of 2012, which involved 26 Italian county seats. The main results show that the new christian democrats perform better in elections when they run alone, and this does not depend on their previous allies.

Abstract
The new christian democrats of the UDC are currently in a key position in the Italian political system. Both the major party on the right (Berlusconi’s PDL) and that on the left (Bersani’s PD) repeatedly try to involve the UDC in coalitions. With whom the UDC will choose to ally becomes a fundamental issue. Studying the behaviour of the UDC thus seems to be crucial for a deeper understanding of Italian politics in the present situation. This work analyzes the electoral strategies and the performance of the UDC in the administrative elections of 2012, which involved 26 Italian county seats. The main results show that the new christian democrats perform better in elections when they run alone, and this does not depend on their previous allies.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
