The authors view the diagnostic possibilities of milk emphasizing above all the experience obtained from the research of the Bologna Veterinary School. They especially placed emphasis on the possibilities of classical alterations (fat, protein concentration, cell count, urea w and ketone bodies). Finally, the authors focus on the central role that certain cytokines play in the regulation of the immune response in the mammary gland and show the results of their research in this innovative field.
