Abstract—Electronic and Internet voting provides some significant functional improvements with respect to traditional voting processes, but also put on the floor new important security issues. In this paper we discuss such issues with reference to the current status of development and implementation of electronic and Internet voting in Europe. The manuscript discusses the importance to evaluate the security of the entire voting process and not just of the technological building blocks. Then it reviews the current implementations of electronic and Internet based voting processes in several European Countries and provides an example of voting process security analysis using Fault Tree Analysis.
