The researches carried out - under the direction of the authors - by the Rio La Venta Archaeological Project since 1997 brought to light several evidences of a long and continued Pre-Hispanic ritual tradition of cave offerings and burials, as well as various open-air sites witnessing two colonization waves that during Late Classic and Late Postclassic led to the occupation of the region today protected in the El Ocote Biosphere Reserve. Surveys and excavations in selected sites led to the recovery of ceramic and architectural data that shed light over some scarcely known aspects of Classic and Postclassic Zoque culture, as well as on the complexity of an underground ritual tradition that seems to be quite typical of the karstic areas of Western Chiapas. The contribution summarizes the current knowledge of pre-Hispanic Zoque settlement patterns and ritual practices in the Rio La Venta area, as produced by the authors' research.

Abstract
The contribution summarizes the current knowledge of pre-Hispanic Zoque settlement patterns and ritual practices in the Rio La Venta area, as produced by the authors' research.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
