We present an updated seismo-tectonic summary of the Mediterranean region, taking advantage of the EMMA powerful data base of revised focal mechanisms, coming both from public catalogues (Harvard and MedNet) and literature. A number of maps including focal mechanism solutions, moment tensor summations for given areas, as well as the plot of horizontal projections of P and T axes, is contained in a CD-ROM (attached to Annals of Geophysics August 2004 special issue) also including the EMMA database second release. The area under investigation extends from central Atlantic to Iran, and because of its very large dimension it has been subdivided into portions that we called macro-areas. Following a brief geological introduction, aimed at outlining the main tectonic features for each one of these macro-areas, the observed pattern of seismicity, and the distribution of earthquakes' focal mechanisms in particular, will be presented. Rather than being an attempt to propose a new seismotectonic model of the Mediterranean region, this contribution aims at offering a panoramic view of the active tectonics of the whole region as it appears from the new compilation of focal mechanisms. Detailed aspects of neotectonics are also overlooked, partly for sake of brevity, but also because the present understanding is not homogenous over the whole study area. In this respect, the reader is addressed to the most relevant papers concerning each specific area, which are extensively quoted whenever necessary.

Abstract
In this respect, the reader is addressed to the most relevant papers concerning each specific area, which are extensively quoted whenever necessary.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
