Dinuclear dicationic gold complexes containing amide-functionalized bis(NHC) ligands exhibit aurophilic interactions in the presence of halogen counterions, as shown in compounds 5 and 6. DFT calculations confirmed the stability of these geometries and predicted longer gold•••gold distances in the absence of halogen anions. This was confirmed by employing a “non-interactive” anion like tetraphenylborate in complex 8. Both types of complexes were unambiguously characterized by X-ray analysis. Furthermore, only complexes 5 and 6 containing the halogen anions are luminescent in the solid state and in a water matrix at 77 K.
