The Seed Symposium of the 27th ISTA Congress was held in Budapest, Hungary in May 2004. This paper presents a review of the oral and poster papers presented in seven sessions under the theme 'Towards the future in seed production, evaluation and improvement', namely application of advanced technologies; organic and conventional seed production; viability and vigour: evaluation and impact; seed systems in developing and emerging economies; seed lot hygiene; seed improvement; physiological basis of seed quality.
